Quite a common question we ask during the fitting process in our Design Studio is – ‘How are the wedding plans coming along’. 9 times out of ten we know the response as it is written on the brides face but the most common answer is ‘I’m just ready for the honeymoon!’ After all the meticulous planning, keeping the relatives happy, making sure everyone else is having a good time, the honeymoon is finally the chance for the two of you to relax!
After you arrive at your destination, the last thing you want is to be overrun by other tourists in some of the worlds most popular destinations – especially with some of the price tags on offer! Simple alternatives to some of these beloved places around the world give you the opportunity to have the same style of holiday but to slow right down, live like a local, enjoy your surroundings and most importantly be together – just the two of you! Don’t get us wrong with the list below – they are some of our favourite spots in the world! Treat our suggestions as an alternative escape!
This may come as a surprise to most as you know our love affair with Amalfi – we were only there in May! Whilst we love the area it is a tad overcrowded especially when a cruise docks for the day! To get your Italian Coastal fix minus the tourists try the Puglia region. Fast becoming a go to spot for many tourists seeking an alternative, there are still times of the year where its just you and the locals! The buildings are bleach blonde and sun-drenched contrasting with the azzure water, a perfect backdrop to any couples get away. Not to forget the Aperol and Peronis! Look to stay in Masseria’s (traditional Italian Farmhouses) which have been converted into hotels for a rustic feel! Our favourite town? Monopoli!
The Greek islands are very distinct from the rest of the Mediterranean, white buildings with blue rooftops cascading to the ocean. Everyone’s favourite Santorini by large is one of the most popular spots in the world for honeymoon given its unbeatable sunsets (if you haven’t witnessed it once in your life you certainly need to!) but it is possible to capture the charm of Santorini by visiting a few neighbouring Islands instead! Paros is situated in the middle of the Cyclades islands between Mykonos and Santorini. It allows a similar feel to these two island favourites, but at a much slower pace. Venture into the hills to visit some smaller local villages or sty close to the water and day trip some of the nearby smaller islands, you’ll appreciate the relaxed lifestyle on offer!
Fiji / Aitutaki, Cook Islands
A long time favoured destination for Aussie couples and families, Fiji already offers life out of the fast lane! But if large resorts aren’t your thing and you just want your own slice of heaven, look no further than Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. With only one flight per week direct out of Sydney into the main Island Rarotonga (connections available from other capital cities via Auckland) running into other tourists is never really an issue! Especially with Aitutaki being another 45 minute flight away! The lagoon around the is one of the most pristine stretches of sand and sea you will lay your eyes on. And the resorts on offer are tranquil, private and most of all romantic. Special mention to the beautiful and accommodating locals that will make sure you have an unforgettable experience! Find yourself a hammock for two, a ‘Nu’ and let the breeze roll on in!
Thailand / Sri Lanka
Thailand can offer alot when it comes to holidays and honeymoons – luxury resorts and villas, sandy beaches, cultural history and stretches of tropical jungles. But another destination has emerged in the last 10 years to overtake the crown – Sri Lanka. After years of civil unrest finally put behind them, Sri Lanka is now a thriving holiday destination for the adventurous or relaxed honeymooner. Still set in the tropics, chill out at the southern beach resorts, go scouting for leopards, take a scenic flight over the largest Ceylon tea plantation in the world (did we mention we LOVE tea!) or visit the regions ancient temples – there is so much on offer with alot less tourists involved! And if you really want to – tack on an extra few days in the Maldives while you are in the area!
